After watching the balloons get smaller and smaller in the sky as they floated towards heaven, Bob Kirstiuk and his two young children, Hudson and Avery, had a big family hug.
Both children had written short notes to their mother Kerry and attached them to the helium-filled balloons.
Hudson is just three, so his father asked him: What do you want to say to mommy? He wrote the note for his son. I love you and I miss you, it read.
This year, Avery, now in Grade 1, wanted to write the note herself. Kirstiuk’s eyes get watery as he retells the story of releasing the ceremonial balloons at the 2nd annual Camp Kerry on Keats Island last month.
“It’s very emotional,” he says.
Fortunately, the Kirstiuks were able to share the overwhelming emotion with other young families also struggling with the loss of a parent or spouse.
